PICKING UP THE SIGNAL

Suicide is a multi- determined phenomenon that occurs against a background of complex interacting biological, social, psychological and environmental risk and protective factors.

According to WHO there are twenty people who have a failed suicide attempt for every one that is successful at a rate approximately one every three seconds. Suicide is a common cause of violent deaths in the world.

Brian Mishara, the former IASP president noted in 2011 that more people kill themselves than die in all wars, terrorist acts and interpersonal violence combined. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million per year by 2020. So far in Kenya no research has been carried out with majority shying away from it.

Where there is smoke there is fire, that’s why when one exhibits depression, distress, anxiety, fear, apprehension and hopelessness then caution must be taken for the risk/ percentage chances of committing suicide is high. Therefore it is good for one to look out for this signs and seek help.

People who feel suicidal are often so focused on a particular problem or pain that they find difficult to see away forward.

Suicide is influenced by psycho-social, cultural and environmental risks that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors.
